Organic Magic with Worms
Yonge Street Mission held a "meet
the red wigglers" event for a group of students in the after
school program. Cathy Nesbitt from Cathy’s Crawly Composters
has been raising awareness about environmental conservation to
students and groups since 2002 with her worm-composting program.
The students learned about vermicomposting, which is a leading
edge answer to our organic waste problems. Over 50,000 students
have seen her presentation and Cathy has spoken on vermiculture
at provincial and national conferences. Red wiggler worms convert
food scraps and paper into nature's finest soil amendment. Indoor
composting is part of the solution for our current garbage situation,
Cathy is currently composting with one worm chalet and now the
YSM is taking on a 2nd Worm Chalet for students to help raise
the awareness. Through recycling organic material by vermicomposting,
we will have some of the best fertilizers available anywhere.
