What is the difference between Red Wigglers and European Night Crawlers:

The biggest difference you will notice between the Reds and the Euros is the size. European Night Crawlers are a larger worm. Bigger than the Red Wigglers and slightly smaller that the Canadian Night Crawlers (the ones you see on the sidewalk after a rain). Because they are a larger worm, many people raise European Night Crawlers if they want both a good composting worm and a bait worm they can take fishing.

In my experience I have found that European Night Crawlers are a bit more forgiving. If your bin dries out the Euros can survive longer in drought conditions. Probably due to the larger body mass they can store more moisture. The Europeans can also tolerate slightly more acidic conditions. They absolutely love coffee grounds and chaff. Red Wigglers are the optimum composting worm since they have the biggest appetite for compost and food scraps. But the Euros are not far behind in the amount of food scraps they consume and they will consume more carbon (paper, straw, cardboard) than the Reds.

Most worm growers would agree that European Night Crawlers are an easier worm to take care of.

Vermicomposting Systems

Tray systems are perfect for those that do not like to handle the worms or for families that produce more food scraps than the basic Vermicomposter can handle. Harvesting the Living Composter or the Worm Chalet is clean and easy. When the worms have finished converting food scraps and bedding from one tray, add another tray with fresh bedding on top and the worms will make their way up to the new food source. The lower tray will now consist of converted castings (worm poo) ready to be used in your plants and gardens.

The Living Composter is a 2nd generation worm composter with a number of design updates:

  • 3 gallon trays have a moisture control water retention channel running around the outside of each tray. Instead of allowing the liquids to fall directly through the tray this channel gathers moisture to prevent the bedding from drying out along the edges.
  • When adding the second tray, a collection of 40 angled tunnels extend down from the bottom directly into the bedding of the tray below. This provides ample access for worms to migrate between trays.
  • Aeration is important for happy worms and good compost. A series of support points are molded into the lower edge of the trays. This raises the trays slightly allowing 360 degrees of airflow across the bedding.
  • The double walled lid and base provide excellent insulation against temperature swings helping to maintain an ideal environment.
    The Living Composter system includes:
  • Two stacking trays, lid and base
  • Each tray has recessed slots to make handling easy
  • Initial bedding (shredded paper, coco-coir, soil/lime mix)
  • Instruction manual
  • Lifetime support

"I didn't think the Sure-Close would be much different from the regular bin I was already using. Boy, was I wrong. The Sure-Close compost pail is by far the best collection container I've ever used. The perforated lid lets the air flow so the pail is odour free. The lid stays open when required making the pail easier to use and can be snapped close with one hand. The opening is angled making it easier to put food scraps in with less spillage ending up on the floor or counter. Possibly the most important feature is the snug interlocking seal and lid clasp that ensures a tight closure that will keep fruit flies out!"

Note: This is not a vermicomposter. It is a compost collection bucket used to collect food scaps.
