During these past few Covid-months our bodies, minds and emotions have taken a battering. So many connections have suddenly disappeared. Social distancing has taken away families, friends and acquaintances. The world has changed. New connections are now taking place over the phone, over Zoom or over the fence. Face to face has been pushed back a couple of yards.

The pandemic has forced some deep and dramatic societal changes. The question is, are these changes here to stay or will we gradually seep back to the old ways? No one knows. One thing we do know, at some point Covid 19 will be gone. How much will society change? How much will you?

We all look forward to that day, for now we need to take care of ourselves. Now more than ever we need to Stay Nourished, Stay Grounded and above all remember to Laugh Everyday!

Be healthy, stay happy.

A Quick Word on the Red Wiggler Worm Shortage.

Under normal circumstances March and April are easily our busiest months for Worm sales. This year with the Covid-19 gearing up most everyone was stuck inside for the forseeable future. With so much idle time on their hands people soon started to cast about for something to keep themselves and their children occupied. What a great opportunity to start something you have always considered but never had the time actually do. What a great time to take up Vermicomposting.

At first it was incredible, never before had we seen this much interest in worms. The people of Ontario were really getting into worm composting and this was shaping up to be our best season ever. Soon however, we ran out of Red Wigglers. No problem, we know many of the big worm growers down south. In the past when our supply runs low we just call one of the big growers and get a new supply sent up north. Unfortunately, we did not realize that this huge interest in Vermicomposting was not confined to southern Ontario. Everybody wanted worms. This tsunami of demand for Red Wigglers soon dried up the supply everywhere. A North American wide shortage of Red Wiggler worms is another unforeseen consequence of Covid-economics. We are still looking at September 2020 before any beds are up to levels where anyone can ship.

Please note: We are fully stocked on all other products including Living Composters and Sprout Growers.

Weekly Zoom Laughter with Cathy
All are welcome - Online Event

A day without laughter is like a day without sunshine. Except with laughter you control it, so there should be no days without sunshine.

Laughter Yoga is simple and profound. An exercise routine and complete well-being workout. Laughter yoga is not about fancy pants or poses. It is laughter for no reason to encourage a sense of child-like play and feeling of joy. The yoga part is all about the deep breathing. The laughing stretches various muscles in your chest, abdomen, neck & shoulders. 10-15 minutes of sustained belly laughter can be equivalent to 30 minutes of rowing!

Back in "Olden" times, when we met with many of you at various show and markets, something we never got tired of hearing were stories from parents about their kids. A surprising number of times we heard: "We need a new sprouter. Our son/daughter fell in love with it and took it with them when they returned to school". It truly heartens us to realize that younger generations are adopting a healthier attitudes toward nutrition.

From this ...

Full Disclosure: Part of our evil plan is to get people hooked on healthier habits at a young age. This way they will get addicted to good nutrition for life (insert maniacal laugh here).

To this.

Sometimes a child would come up to us at a show and devour a sample handful of sprouts and asks for more. Often a parent would remark "I don't know what's got into them, they never eat veggies at home". Picky eaters have a tenancy to really like fresh sprouts. Maybe it is the nutritional density, maybe it is the fresh texture, we don't really know. All we do know is If they like sprouts picky eaters should be encouraged to eat as much as they want.

The first part of sprouting as a hobby is the growing.
This is one of the fun parts.

Necessary items: 1: Something to sprout. 2: Something to sprout in. 3: Water (you will also need air but I'm sure you are already up to your eyeballs with the stuff).

Something to sprout Your success with sprouting starts with the quality of the beans and seeds you sprout. We tried sprouting regular mung beans from the local bulk store. Less than half actually sprouted and the one's that did sprout were small and listless. When proper (preferably organic) sprouting beans & seeds are used it is rare that any of the beans do not germinate. The most common (and easiest) bean to sprout is the mung bean. Mung beans usually take between 1-3 days to sprout. The taste, texture and overall nutrition value make this the ideal bean to start your adventure.

For a full list of what beans or seeds can be sprouted please visit:

Something to sprout in We recommend formal ware whenever possible. Chic Casual works and Pajamas are perfect. Now that that's decided let's look at sprouters.

You can sprout in almost any container. You can even use a paper towel if you are feeling adventurous. The essential steps of sprouting is to keep your beans damp and to change the water regularly. Whichever system you use, we recommend rinsing and changing the water 2 times per day.

Traditionally sprouting was done in a mason jars. Fill your jar about 1/4 full of beans. Fill with water so beans are covered. Rinse and replace water each morning and night. To get water out of the jar use a cheese cloth or some filter and tip pouring all the water out. Note: Be very careful to get all the water out. Bad bacteria can build up in the waste water so be sure too rinse regularly. There are other systems that stack up to 3 trays of sprouts. Many of these systems automatically recycle the water over the sprouts to keep moist.

The Sprouter we recommend (and also sell conveniently enough) is the Super Simple Sprouter designed by Tony Hornick. This sprouter combines ease of use with success. Simply place beans on stainless steel mesh, place in plastic greenhouse and add water. To rinse; pick up mesh, dump water, rinse beans, replace mesh, add fresh water.

The great thing about getting the children or grandchildren involved is that you turn them into instant farmers. They start to take ownership of their garden. They become responsible for growing their own food and it's empowering.

The second part of sprouting as a hobby is the eating.
This is the other fun part.

As much fun to make as it is to eat (where have I heard that one before?). Which is your favourite? Are you a Mung Maniac or perhaps a Lentil Lover? A little Alfalfa atop your tuna salad or maybe a few radish sprouts for a salad that bites back. Sprouts not only add a nutritional boost but can make also make lethargic meals come alive.

When first introduced to sprouting, Tony Hornick told us "For optimum health start your day with a handful of mung bean sprouts". Each sprout is a little nutrition pill that your body will love and the enzymes will aid digestion all day long. Have you ever enjoyed a meal so much that you over indulged just a little more than was prudent? Next time instead of reaching for an enzyme pill or antacid, grab a handful of sprouts. You will probably find they work faster and taste MUCH better.

The best way to eat sprouts is raw. This way you preserve all the digestive enzymes and vitamins. If you do use sprouts in a cooked meal, add them in at the end just before serving. The more you heat sprouts the more enzymes you lose.

Who says you can't sprout while camping?

Just because you don't have a kitchen doesn't mean you can't sprout.

Overheard on Social Media:

I've opened a can of worms.
They just sit there.

Hardly the chaos that's been advertised.

‘A can of worms’
I can in terms of choice, voice these many facts
About worms – their many acts
They help to aerate the land
Break down matter – give a ‘hand’
Food, they have chewed and shat compost
Yes – such scat better than most
They can abide beneath one’s kitchen sink
Between garden and scraps – that missing link
Opening up a can of worms
Though better a box – think life – long term

How safe are we from the effects of EMF Radiation?

Electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) are invisible areas of energy, or radiation, that are associated with the use of electrical power. Sources include: Cell phones, Computers, Wifi networks, Television, Microwaves, Electrical wiring and even plumbing (metal water pipes are a great conductors of nearby EMF sources such as power lines).

Just what are EMF's and Should we be afraid?

Our new normal is a world that is being constantly bombarded with EMF radiation. Prolonged exposure to this mid to low frequency radiation can disrupt the natural function of cells and may cause damage to the immune system. Reported symptoms of exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) include headaches, anxiety, suicide and depression, nausea, fatigue and loss of libido.

“Now, in the age of cellular telephones, wireless routers, and the Internet of things, all of which use EMF, concerns persist about possible connections between EMF and adverse health effects. These exposures are actively being studied. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) recommends continued education on practical ways of reducing exposures to EMFs. “
National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS)

EHS is a recent phenomenon which manifests with signs and symptoms in some sensitive individuals with EMF exposure from varied electronic sources. According to WHO [1], about 1–3% of the world’s population are affected by EHS syndrome.

1 - WHO (World Health Organization), “Electromagnetic hypersensitivity,” in Proceedings of the International Workshop on EMF Hypersensitivity, Prague, Czech Republic, 2004.

How can we protect ourselves?

The best way to protect yourself from the effects of EMF radiation is to avoid them altogether. Put your phone down and go for a walk (actually, that is a good remedy for most of our ills). Never carry a cell phone in your breast pocket or front pant pocket for men. Unplug or turn off your wifi when you go to bed.

Unfortunately in our modern 24-hour lifestyle sometimes getting away from our electronics may not be practical or even possible. One answer you may want to consider an EMF blocker or shield.

EMF blockers work by changing the EMF to neutral frequency levels that are not harmful. By harmonizing the radiation the blockers reduce your exposure to EMF emitted from your devices.

The efficacy of EMF protection pendants or shields, like most products, depends on the materials used. Some are inevitably more effective than others, and it’s worth researching what materials the pendant is made from before making a purchase.

What are Eradicator EMF protection shields and what makes them different.

Eradicator technology uses a specific zinc and copper formula embedded with Basic Frequencies. Radiation is measured in wavelengths. The wavelength is directly proportional to the frequency. A “Basic Frequency” is a specific frequency you add to another frequency to manipulate it, in order to alter the wavelength of the radiation. Different sources of radiation require a different Basic Frequency.

The majority of similar products available on the market today for EMF Protection use “Quartz Crystal technology.” They may not tell you but if you open some of these shields, you will find Quartz. Quartz Crystal technology is the old way of dealing with EMF. It has properties to harmonize EMF but has a dangerous side to it. Quartz absorbs radiation but if it is not cleaned properly and regularly it can amplify the radiation you are exposed to. Additionally, Quartz Crystal technology cannot clear the radiation already stored in your cells.
